Glucose metabolism in the late preterm infant.
Prematurity and low birth weight are important determinants of neonatal morbidity and mortality. A rising trend of preterm births is caused by an increase in the birth rate of near-term infants. Near-term infants are defined as infants of 34 to 36 6/7 weeks gestation. It is dangerous to assume that the incidence of hypoglycemia in the later preterm infant is similar to the infant born at full t...
متن کاملRetarded fetal growth patterns and early neonatal mortality in a Mexico City population.
The study reported here classified 9,660 newborn infants delivered at a maternal and child health center in Mexico City by length of gestation, presence or absence of growth retardation, and (in the case of growth-retarded infants) proportionate or disproportionate growth retardation in terms of the infants' weight and length. It was found that preterm infants (delivered before 38 weeks of gest...
متن کاملNutritional assessment in preterm infants.
If the aim of nutritional assessment of preterm infants is to identify suboptimal (or excessive) provision of protein, energy and micronutrients, most currently available methods perform poorly. Assessment of body weight is limited by the confounding effect of fluid status especially in the first few days of life, and measurements of linear growth are relatively imprecise and slow to respond to...
متن کاملPostnatal growth standards for preterm infants: the Preterm Postnatal Follow-up Study of the INTERGROWTH-21(st) Project.
BACKGROUND Charts of size at birth are used to assess the postnatal growth of preterm babies on the assumption that extrauterine growth should mimic that in the uterus. METHODS The INTERGROWTH-21(st) Project assessed fetal, newborn, and postnatal growth in eight geographically defined populations, in which maternal health care and nutritional needs were met. From these populations, the Fetal ...
متن کاملAggressive Nutrition of the Preterm Infant.
Nutrition of preterm infants should result in growth similar to that of normally growing fetuses of the same gestational age. Unfortunately, most preterm infants are not fed enough to achieve this objective; as a result they are growth restricted by term gestation. Recent studies have demonstrated that early and enhanced "aggressive" nutrition of preterm infants can reduce postnatal growth fail...
متن کاملEffect of Kangaroo Mother Care on the Self-esteem of Mothers of Preterm Infants Hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Background: Preterm newborn birth is usually a challenge for the mother and the family. The mother feels inadequate for the care of her newborn and her self-esteem decreases. In this regard, this study aimed to determine the effect of Kangaroo other Care (KMC) on the self-esteem of mothers of preterm newborns. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 46 pairs of m...
